IDMA laments passing of diamond veteran Vasant Mehta
The global diamond industry has lost a titan in Vasant Mehta, a seminal figure who steered the Indian diamond industry to prominence and left an indelible mark on the international diamond community. Mehta, who passed away earlier this week, was more than just a leader; he was a mentor, a visionary, and a symbol of wisdom and integrity.
Mehta’s influence spanned over a decade, during which he served as the International Diamond Manufacturers Association’s (IDMA) Vice President in two stints, from 1998-2000 and 2002-2008. In 2008, he was elected Chair of the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council of India (GJEPC), further cementing his role as a driving force in the global diamond industry.
Mehta’s leadership was instrumental in guiding the Indian diamond industry and establishing its significant role in the Kimberley Process and World Diamond Council. The Kimberley Process is a joint partnership to stem the flow of conflict diamonds, while the World Diamond Council promotes the diamond industry’s self-regulatory initiatives. Mehta’s efforts in these areas not only enhanced India’s standing in the global diamond trade but also ensured the industry’s commitment to ethical practices and sustainable growth.
Mehta’s impact was felt beyond the industry. His work with relevant governmental institutions and authorities in India helped shape the country’s diamond trade policies. His advocacy and negotiation skills often resulted in favorable outcomes for the Indian diamond industry, demonstrating his prowess as a diplomat as much as a businessman.

IDMA President Ronnie VanderLinden paid a heartfelt tribute to Mehta, noting, “Vasant Mehta’s leadership, wisdom, steadfast dedication, and cool demeanor left an indelible mark on the global diamond industry. His vision and integrity shaped our diamond and jewelry community for the better.” VanderLinden, who served under Mehta during his IDMA tenure, credited Mehta’s leadership for creating a lasting impact on the industry’s trajectory.
Honorary IDMA President Jeffrey Fischer echoed VanderLinden’s sentiments, remarking, “Vasant was a fountain of wisdom, warmth, and support. He let you know where he stood, always with tact and respect.” Fischer highlighted Mehta’s sincerity and his ability to communicate his stance clearly and respectfully, a trait that earned him profound respect within the industry.
Stephane Fischler, a former President of the World Diamond Council, penned a tribute that showed Mehta’s selflessness and generosity. Fischler noted that for Mehta, serving the industry was as important as his successful business. Mehta’s dedication to the Indian diamond trade was such that he often pleaded the GJEPC’s case successfully with the government, leaving a significant legacy that the current and future generations should strive to uphold.
Mehta’s passing has indeed left a void in the global diamond industry. His leadership, vision, and integrity have shaped the industry into what it is today, and his spirit of service and warmth will continue to inspire those who knew him and the generations that follow.
